The Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington DC (CSIS) and the Development Gateway have partnered to develop two new online communities: Disaster Prevention and Response, and Stabilization and Reconstruction. These portals will provide a virtual space where participants can share knowledge, lessons learned, best practices, and other information in an effort to build capacity, strengthen working relationships, and improve development outcomes in these areas. Cyclone Nargis swept across southern Myanmar on the evening of 2 May 2008, leaving a trail of death and destruction before tapering off the next day. Winds from the cyclone reached as high as 200 kph, the storm that hit Myanmar two months ago – is still visible. But meanwhile WFP has reached over 684,000 beneficiaries with food rations.

The ProVention Consortium is a global coalition of international organisations, governments, the private sector, civil society organisations and academic institutions dedicated to increasing the safety of vulnerable communities and to reducing the impacts of disasters in developing countries.
